If you’ve registered your car in the state of Puebla, Mexico, you need to pay your annual vehicle tax. Luckily, it’s a pretty simple process you can handle online, and there are several payment options. After living in Puebla for over 3 years, I’ll walk you through the process so you know how to do it yourself easily. Let’s get started!

Who has to pay vehicle taxes?

Anyone with a vehicle registered in Puebla, Mexico. As of 2025, electric and hybrid vehicles are exempt from the tax.

How much is the vehicle tax in Puebla?

The current cost for the derecho de control vehicular (vehicle control rights) is 670 MXN (33 USD).

When do you have to pay the vehicle tax?

You need to pay the derecho de control vehicular (vehicle control rights) within the first three months of the year. If you miss the deadline, you’ll also have to pay the tenencia vehicular (vehicle ownership tax). This additional fee depends on your vehicle type:

  • Motorcycles: 225 MXN (12 USD)
  • Up to 4 cylinders: 410 MXN (21 USD)
  • From 5 to 6 cylinders: 645 MXN (33 USD)
  • More than 6 cylinders: 855 MXN (44 USD)

For new vehicles and used vehicles between 1 and 9 model years old, the tenencia is calculated based on the invoice value and model year.

Step-by-Step Process: How to Pay Your Vehicle Tax in Puebla

  1. Go to https://rl.puebla.gob.mx/adeudovehicular.
  2. Enter your license plate number and the Captcha.
  3. Click Consultar (Consult).
  4. A pop-up will appear with the information below. Just click Aceptar (Accept).
    • If the amount shown includes photo violations, these only apply to those issued for exceeding the speed limit; violations other than those listed above should be reviewed on the Safe Mobility website: http://fotoinfraccion.puebla.gob.mx.
  5. Depending on whether there are outstanding debts for your vehicle, you’ll get one of the following results:
    • A pop-up saying that you don’t have any vehicle taxes or speed violations to pay (in this case, proceed directly to step 8):
      • La consulta del adeudo se realizó exitosamente, pero no existen adeudos activos para el vehículo.
    • A new page with a list of what you owe. Click Realizar Pago (Make Payment) to pay your debts.
  6. Enter your car’s serial number, the Captcha, and click Obtener Pago (Get Payment).
  7. Choose how you’d like to pay:
    • By credit card – Only Mexican credit cards are accepted.
    • By bank payment – Download the payment receipt and pay in cash or by card at any of the banks or stores listed. Foreign credit cards are usually accepted at these physical locations. Some places may charge a small extra fee. Choose this payment option to pay at one of the listed banks in Puebla, or one of the following chain stores (even outside Puebla):
      • Bodega Aurera
      • 7 Eleven
      • Farmacias del Ahorro
      • Walmart
      • Walmart Express
      • Circle K
  8. Recommended: To double-check that you don’t owe anything besides your vehicle tax or speeding fines, go to http://fotoinfraccion.puebla.gob.mx and enter your license plate number. If everything listed for your car says Pagado (Paid), you’re all good; else, pay any outstanding debts.
